History of Avicenna Academy
Established in 1988 in Sacramento, California, Avicenna Academy was the first of its kind—founded with the mission of providing high-quality Persian language and cultural education to children of Persian descent, regardless of their country of origin, religious background, or cultural identity.
Since its founding, the school has remained committed to helping elementary and middle school students learn Farsi as a second language in a warm and supportive environment.
Over the years, Avicenna Academy has offered a variety of enriching programs and activities, including:
- Farsi language instruction for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
- Celebrations of Persian cultural traditions, such as Nowruz and Yalda.
- Music classes where students explore the richness of Persian music and traditional instruments.
- Educational, cultural, and social field trips.
- Creative classes for teenagers in cooking, ceramics, arts, and other fun activities.
- Partnerships with like-minded institutions across the United States to advance shared goals.
The school has transitioned through several campuses over the years. Initially, it was situated in Carmichael, hosting activities from its establishment in 1988 until 2000. Subsequently, the school relocated to a different campus in Orangevale, where it operated from 2000 to 2012. In 2013, alongside its move to the SALAM campus in Sacramento, the institution underwent a name change, transitioning from Avicenna Farsi School to “Avicenna Academy.” This change aimed to broaden its appeal beyond its traditional demographic, aspiring to engage a wider audience of families within the greater Sacramento area interested in providing comprehensive Persian cultural and literary education to their school-age children.
Parent-Teacher Association (PTA)
Avicenna Academy takes pride in the fact that many of its current students are the children of the school’s earliest generations. We believe that meaningful education happens when families are actively involved—bringing cultural values to life both at home and within the school community.
That’s why we encourage all parents to join the PTA and share their voices. We truly value your ideas, feedback, and creativity. Your involvement helps shape the school’s direction and enriches the experience for all students.
The Avicenna PTA plays a vital role in building a strong sense of community by organizing events throughout the year, including our beloved Nowruz and Yalda celebrations, as well as other cultural and school activities that bring families together.
