History of Avicenna Academy

The Avicenna School, established in 1988 in Sacramento, California, was the pioneer institution of its kind, dedicated to providing Persian language and cultural education to children of Persian descent, irrespective of their country of origin, religious beliefs, or cultural affiliations.

Since its inception, the school’s primary objective has been to foster the acquisition of Farsi as a second language within a supportive environment tailored for elementary and middle school students.

Over the years, the Avicenna School has offered a range of services including:

  • Instruction in Farsi for students from kindergarten to eighth grade.
  • Commemoration of Persian cultural traditions such as Nowruz and Yalda.
  • Optional courses covering topics such as music, history, and culture.
  • Organizing educational, cultural, and social outings.
  • Collaborating with like-minded institutions across the United States to further shared objectives.

The school has transitioned through several campuses over the years. Initially, it was situated in Carmichael, hosting activities from its establishment in 1988 until 2000. Subsequently, the school relocated to a different campus in Orangevale, where it operated from 2000 to 2012. In 2013, alongside its move to the SALAM campus in Sacramento, the institution underwent a name change, transitioning from Avicenna Farsi School to “Avicenna Academy.” This change aimed to broaden its appeal beyond its traditional demographic, aspiring to engage a wider audience of families within the greater Sacramento area interested in providing comprehensive Persian cultural and literary education to their school-age children.

Parent-Teacher Association (PTA)

Avicenna Academy takes pride in the fact that a significant number of its current students are the offspring of the initial generations of the Avicenna School. We firmly believe that the most effective education stems from empowering families and parents to instill cultural values both at home and within the school environment. Consequently, Avicenna Academy is fortunate to enjoy robust parental engagement through its Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). The PTA organizes various activities, including annual celebrations such as the Nowruz and Yalda programs, fostering a vibrant community spirit within the school.
